November 6th is the day we all should go to the polls and vote in the Mid-Term Elections. No matter where you stand politically for the different candidates, there is one item on the ballot we want to bring special attention to. It’s State Question 793. You might have seen the ads on TV or even the signs in Walmart encouraging you to vote yes. Walmart wants everyone to think this issue is about allowing Walmart to provide “affordable” eye care to Oklahomans.
Don’t be fooled Walmart can already have optical shops in Oklahoma, there is no law preventing it. This is a change to our state constitution that would shift control from our State Board of Examiners to determine the Scope of Care to corporations. This is not a good thing for Oklahoma by any means. Currently, our state is ranked one of the best in the nation for Optometric Care and that will go away when control of the industry is turned over to corporations whose motive is profit, not health care.
Don’t be fooled by this attempt that failed in our legislature for last 12 years, this attempt is Walmart going around the legal process and using deceptive techniques to convince the good people of Oklahoma that affordable vision care doesn’t exist without them. I’ve been to Walmart’s in other states like Arkansas and Kansas. Believe me the price for what you get apples to apples is not cheaper.
Make sure to tell everyone you know to Vote No on SQ 793.
